คุณศัพท์ขั้นกว่า (Comparative Degree)ใช้ในการเปรียบเทียบคน 2 คน หรือสิ่งของ 2 สิ่ง
โดยเติม -er หรือ more
ตัวอย่าง Dang is bigger than Dam. แดงตัวใหญ่กว่าดำ
This question is more difficult than that one. คำถามนี้ยากกว่าคำถามนั้นหมายเหตุ

: เมื่อมีการชี้เฉพาะถึง 2 สิ่ง ให้ใช้ the หน้าขั้นกว่าด้วย
: ถ้ามี than แสดงว่าต้องเป็นขั้นกว่า

คุณศัพท์ขั้นสูงสุด (Superative Degree)ใช้ในการเปรียบเทียบคน 3 คน หรือของ 3 สิ่งขึ้นไป
โดยเติม - est หรือ most และเติม the ไว้ข้างหน้า

ตัวอย่าง Of the all children, Tom is the tallest. ในบรรดาเด็กทุกคน ทอมสูงกว่าเพื่อน
Of the three girls, I like Manee best. ในบรรดาเด็กผู้หญิงทั้ง 3 คน ผมชอบมณีมากที่สุด Which of these books is the most interesting? หนังสือเล่มไหนน่าสนใจที่สุด
หมายเหตุ : อย่าเติม more ข้างหน้าคุณศัพท์ที่เติม -er
: อย่าเติม most ข้างหน้าคุณศัพท์ที่เติม -est

1.การเปลี่ยนคุณศัพท์ในขั้นกว่าและขั้นสุด1.คุณศัพท์พยางค์เดียวทั่วๆไปเติม er ในขั้นกว่า
และ est ในขั้นสุด เช่น fast --------- faster --------- fastest
cold ---- ---- colder --------- coldest
ข้อสังเกต ถ้าคุณศัพท์ลงท้ายท้ายพยัญชนะ แต่หน้าพยัญชนะเป็นสระ ให้ซ้ำ
พยัญชนะตัวท้ายก่อนเติม er หรือ est เช่น
big ---------- bigger -------- biggest
hot --------- hotter -------- hottest
2.คุณศัพท์สองพยางค์
ให้เติม er ในขั้นกว่า หรือ est ในขั้นสุด เช่น narrow ------ narrower -------- narrowest
shallow ---------- shallower ------------- shallower ข้อสังเกต ถ้าคุณศัพท์สองพยางค์ลงท้ายด้วย y ให้เปลี่ยน y เป็น i แล้วเติม er หรือ est
เช่น pretty ------------ prettier ----------------- prettiest
heavy ------------ heavier ----------------- heaviest

3.คำคุณศัพท์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย e ให้เติม r หรือ st เช่น
gentle ------------ gentler ------------------ gentlest
simple ----------- simpler ----------------- simplest

4.คุณศัพท์ตั้งแต่ 3 พยางค์ขึ้นไป เติม moreในขั้นกว่า และ เติม most ในขั้นสุด เช่น
beautiful -------- more beautiful ------------ most beautiful
expensive ------ more expemsive ---------- most expensive
difficult --------- more dificult --------------- most difficult

5.คุณศัพท์ที่เปลี่ยนรูป good --------- better ------------ best
bad --------- worse ------------- worst
little --------- more --------------most
far ------------farther ------------farthest
further ------------furthest

6.คุณศัพท์บางคำอาจจะเติม er หรือmore ในขั้นกว่าและเติม est หรือ most ในขั้นสุด
common -- commoner / more common --commonest / most common
clever ---- cleverer / more clever -----cleverest / most clever
